University College London Hospital -Urinary Diversion Department

Urinary Diversion Department

The Department is available Monday to Friday and forms a vital part of the Urology Team. It consists of 3 Clinical Nurse Specialists:-Sharon Fillingham, Sue Fell and Jo Parker.

The services of the Department are offered to all UCLH adult and adolescent inpatients and outpatients undergoing Urinary Diversion. The aim of the service is to pro-
vide specialist advice, support and education to patients, carers
and health professionals.

The surgical procedures covered are: Urostomy, Mitrofanoff, Enterocystoplasty, Neobladder, and MainzII.
Prior to surgery patients are assessed by the team and provided with verbal, written and visual information relating to the pro- posed surgical procedures. Following admission for surgery they play an integral part in the management and provision of nursing care , facilitating the process of adaptation following major life changing surgery ensuring a smooth transition from hospital to home. On discharge from hospital the department provides continued support for patient and their family either via phone or clinic consultation.

Between them Sharon, Sue and Jo have over 70 years Urological Nursing experience. In 2011 they received University College London Hospitals Chairman’s team award and medal for excellence in teaching and training. They were praised not only for their contribution to the teaching and training of other healthcare professionals but also their vital role in teaching their patients the skills needed to cope with the complexity of urinary diversion.
